Tennessee State Parks have installed new trail signs at several parks to provide visitors with more detailed information about trail conditions.
The signs, also available online, include details such as trail grade, slope, width, and surface type. The information is intended to help all visitors, including those using wheelchairs or all-terrain wheelchairs available at many parks.
Tennessee is the first state to use the High-Efficiency Trail Assessment Process (HETAP) to measure trail specifics such as length, grade, and potential obstructions.
Trail assessors are funded by TDEC’s Access 2030 initiative, which aims to improve accessibility across the state park system. The Tennessee State Parks Conservancy purchased one of the HETAP units.
According to Nashville’s WZTV-TV, the number of parks with the new trail signs is expected to expand in the coming months.
