TRACY CITY, Tenn. — An off-duty Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper is facing multiple felony charges following a crash, vehicle pursuit, and shooting that occurred earlier this month near Tracy City.
As SValleyNow previously reported, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate an incident involving an off-duty trooper on June 2 at the request of 12th Judicial District Attorney General Courtney Lynch.
In an update released Tuesday, the TBI identified the trooper as Timothy Johnson, 57, and announced that he has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault.
According to investigators, Johnson was driving his personal vehicle when he was involved in a crash near Tracy City. TBI agents say the driver of the other vehicle left the scene following the collision.
Authorities allege that Johnson then pursued the vehicle and made multiple attempts to ram it during the chase. Investigators further state that Johnson fired his Tennessee Highway Patrol-issued service weapon during the pursuit, striking the other vehicle.
The chase ultimately came to an end when the driver of the other vehicle lost control and crashed in the 1400 block of U.S. Highway 41.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the gunfire.
Johnson was booked into the Grundy County Jail on Tuesday, June 9. Jail records show his bond was set at $30,000.
The investigation remains ongoing. SValleyNow.com will provide additional information as it becomes available.
Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
